Helping families & businesses keep more of what they earn through tax-efficient financial planning.

Most Canadians believe owning a home is the only p Most Canadians believe owning a home is the only path to building wealth. A major new study says it’s more complicated than that.

PWL Capital analyzed renting versus owning across 12 Canadian cities from 2005 to 2024. Here’s what they found:

🏙 Montreal — Renter-investors built 48% more wealth than homeowners
🏙 Toronto — Renters came out 37% ahead
🏙 Ottawa — Renters ahead
🏙 Edmonton — Renters ahead
🏙 Winnipeg — Renters ahead
🏙 Quebec City — Renters ahead
🏙 Hamilton — Close — slight renter edge
🏙 Vancouver — Owners ahead by 29%
🏙 Victoria — Owners ahead
🏙 Calgary — Owners ahead
🏙 Kitchener-Waterloo — Owners ahead
🏙 Edmonton — Owners ahead

The catch nobody talks about:
The renters who came out ahead didn’t just save on housing costs. They invested every dollar of the difference — consistently, over 20 years. The study found that nationally, renters and owners finished nearly even. Renters only pulled ahead significantly in cities where rents were low relative to home prices AND where they invested with near-perfect discipline.

Most people don’t do that.

So the real question was never rent or own.
It’s what are you actually doing with your money either way.

If you want to know what the right move looks like for your specific situation —
DM me RENT VS OWN and let’s look at it together.

A financial plan should be about more than investm A financial plan should be about more than investments, insurance, or getting a good mortgage rate.

It should connect your money to the life you’re actually trying to build.

That’s why I use the 3 Burning Questions:

🔥 Will I have enough?
🔥 Am I making the right moves?
🔥 What if everything changes?

If you can’t answer those questions, you may have financial products in place without having a financial plan designed around you.

Are you designing your financial future, or defaulting into it?

How much should you be saving for retirement by yo How much should you be saving for retirement by your age?

These numbers might surprise you.

The figures in this video are inflation-adjusted from the original 2015 BMO retirement savings benchmarks using Canadian CPI.

And there’s an important takeaway: the longer you wait to build retirement savings, the more you may need to contribute to catch up.

But remember—there is no single “right” number for everyone. Your retirement target depends on your income, desired lifestyle, retirement age, CPP/OAS, pensions, investment returns, and how much you’ve already saved.

So… where do you fall?

Comment your age and I’ll tell you which number in the video applies to you.

41.9% of income. That’s what the average Canadian 41.9% of income.

That’s what the average Canadian family paid in total taxes, according to the Fraser Institute’s latest Canadian Consumer Tax Index.

And that number is easy to underestimate because taxes don’t show up in just one place.

They’re built into your everyday life through payroll deductions, sales taxes, property taxes, fuel taxes and more.

The bigger takeaway?

Tax planning shouldn’t be a once-a-year conversation.

Tax season comes once a year. Tax planning should happen all year.

Your home can be one of your biggest assets, but t Your home can be one of your biggest assets, but that doesn’t mean the money inside it is easy to access.

Paying down your mortgage can be a great strategy.
